God’s Unconditional Love

"We have made up a God in our image. Because we are angry and judgmental, we have projected those characteristics onto Him. But God remains who He is and always will be: He is the energy, the thought of unconditional love. He cannot think with anger or judgment. He is mercy and compassion and total acceptance." Marianne Williamson

I continue to wonder how we are to understand what is meant by God's unconditional love? If we are prepared to accept and share this definition with others would that not mean that we can no longer impose any positions that would result in any forms of exclusivity? For example why are so many religions so quick to impose conditions on God's unconditional love by insisting that only they possess the full Truth, or that God's salvation is limited to members of their church, synagogue, temple, group, etc.? Why do we fight among each other as to who holds the key to God's Kingdom? Why do we insist that God will punish those who do not subscribe to the teachings of their particular belief system? Why do some religions present an unknowable God but then insist that He can only be understood through a strict practise of religious doctrine and dogma? Why do some religions use fear and retribution to describe God's unconditional love?

It seems to me that God offers us his unconditional love as something that reaches beyond the intellect and mere words. It is His message to our hearts. More than twenty years ago I attended my first religious retreat. During this time God reached my heart by presenting my with Psalm 139. Its verses literally leapt off the page as it spoke clearly about His unconditional love. More recently I was again reminded about the love that sets us free to love Him, our neighbours and ourselves. The reminder read as follows:
